Picking your first AI tool (without overthinking it)
ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini — which one should your team start with? Here's the short answer I give clients.
The single most common question I get from teams is some version of:
"Which AI tool should we standardize on?"
My honest answer: it matters less than you think — and a little more than you'd like.
The short version
- If you live in Microsoft 365 and have the licensing, start with Copilot. Friction is the killer of adoption, and Copilot is already where the work is.
- If you don't, start with ChatGPT for general use and Claude when you need long context or careful reasoning.
- If you're a Google Workspace shop, Gemini is a real contender — especially as it tightens into Docs, Sheets, and Gmail.
The longer version
Tool choice is the smallest decision. The bigger ones are:
- Who trains the team — not "who watches a video," but who sits with people while they use it
- What policies wrap around it — data, prompts, what's allowed in client work
- What you measure — time saved, errors avoided, output quality
Get those three right and you can swap tools later without breaking anything.
