# Maple Workshop: Brand Instructions

Give this file to any writer or AI working on Maple Workshop material. Maple Workshop is a fictional tutorial business.

## How to read this file

Every rule has a status:

- **Approved:** decided by the owner. Follow it.
- **Observed:** read directly from a source file. Treat it as fact.
- **Proposed:** a suggestion that hasn't been tested yet. Use it, but say that it's provisional.
- **Unresolved:** not decided. Don't choose for the owner. Ask, or leave it out.

## Facts

- **Approved:** use event facts only from the owner's current facts file (`workshop-facts.txt`). If you don't have it, ask for it. Don't invent dates, prices, addresses, parking, booking links, refunds or safety instructions.
- **Approved:** put missing details in a separate editorial note, never in public copy. Don't write "coming soon."

---

## Logo

**Approved:** use `maple-logo.svg` exactly as supplied. Don't redraw, recolor, stretch or retype it. The full source is below, so this file works on its own:

```svg
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="360" height="90" viewBox="0 0 360 90"><rect width="76" height="76" x="5" y="7" rx="18" fill="#173d2a"/><path d="M23 60V29L43 48 63 29V60" fill="none" stroke="#f5f1e7" stroke-width="7"/><text x="98" y="42" font-family="Arial" font-size="29" fill="#173d2a" font-weight="bold">MAPLE</text><text x="100" y="68" font-family="Arial" font-size="18" fill="#173d2a" letter-spacing="3">WORKSHOP</text></svg>
```

**Observed construction:**

| Part | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | 360 × 90 (viewBox `0 0 360 90`) |
| Icon | 76 × 76 rounded square, corner radius 18, fill `#173d2a` |
| "M" mark | Single stroke, width 7, no fill, stroke `#f5f1e7` |
| "MAPLE" | Arial, bold, size 29, `#173d2a` |
| "WORKSHOP" | Arial, regular, size 18, letter spacing 3, `#173d2a` |
| Background | None (transparent) |
| Text | Live text, not outlines. It needs Arial to look as intended. |

**Proposed (not visually tested):**
- **Clear space:** at least 18 px of empty space on every side of the 360 × 90 logo. Scale the space with the logo.
- **Minimum width:** 240 px on screen. At that width, "WORKSHOP" is about 12 px.

---

## Color

**Approved palette (only these two):**

| Name | Hex | RGB | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maple Green | `#173D2A` | 23, 61, 42 | Text, headings, icon, solid panels |
| Maple Cream | `#F5F1E7` | 245, 241, 231 | Page backgrounds, text on green |

- **Contrast:** green on cream is **10.72 : 1**. This passes WCAG AAA (7 : 1) for normal text. Calculated from the hex values.
- **Approved:** navy is **not** a brand color. Don't use it in new brand work.
- **Proposed:** for thin lines or muted text, use the green at reduced opacity rather than a new color.

---

## Typography

- **Approved font stack:** `font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;`
- **Observed in logo:** "MAPLE" is Arial bold, uppercase. "WORKSHOP" is Arial regular, uppercase, with letter spacing 3.
- **Unresolved:** heading and body sizes for documents.

---

## Voice

**Approved:**
- **Calm and practical.** No pep-talk slogans, no forced humor, no hype, no exclamation marks, no superlatives.
- **Audience:** adults trying basic home repair. **Don't assume** they own a home or have tools.
- Speak to the reader as "you." Use contractions naturally. Keep sentences short and plain.
- **Open with what people will actually do**, not a catalog-style description.
- Keep schedule detail light in announcements: the overall time and the practice length are enough.
- Always include the equipment and shoes instruction in event copy.
- Put date, time, location and price together in one place.
- Aim for about 100 words in announcements, but don't force an exact count.
- Show the owner a draft before saving or publishing.

**Approved voice examples:**

> You'll watch a demonstration, then get 65 minutes of supervised practice.

> Tools and safety glasses are supplied. Please wear closed-toe shoes.

Earlier style samples used during drafting are **not** approved examples. Don't reuse their wording or any promise they made.

## Do and don't

The "don't" lines were written to illustrate each rule. They are not real Maple copy.

| Do | Don't | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You'll watch a demonstration, then get 65 minutes of supervised practice. | This is a beginner home-repair class for adults. | Catalog-style opening. Fine later in the copy, not first. |
| Tools and safety glasses are supplied. Please wear closed-toe shoes. | Unlock your potential! | Pep-talk slogan and hype. |
| Tools and safety glasses are supplied, so you don't need to buy your own. | Perfect for homeowners who want to fix up their place. | Assumes home ownership. |
| The last 20 minutes are for questions and cleanup. | We'll make sure every question gets answered. | A promise the source doesn't make. |
| Leave missing details out of public copy and add an editorial note. | Address and parking details coming soon. | Promises something nobody has confirmed. |

## Unresolved choices (ask the owner; don't decide)

1. **Clear space and minimum size.** The proposed values need testing on real screens and print.
2. **Live text in the logo.** Without Arial, the wordmark falls back to another font. Should there be a separate outlined version? Keep the original unchanged either way.
3. **Logo variations.** Only one version exists. There's no icon-only, cream-on-green or one-color version.
4. **Type scale.** Heading and body sizes for documents aren't set.
5. **Extra colors.** No accent, link, warning or error colors are approved.
6. **Older practice files.** `welcome.html` and `welcome-price-v2.html` use navy and cream `#f8f3e6`. They were left unchanged on purpose.
7. **Tagline.** None exists.
